Singapore police will check on bars, nightclubs and all other nightlife venues today and tomorrow to make sure they do not host final parties for customers before shutting down.

The threat to dispatch police came after the authorities said they were “aware a number of nightlife operators intend to host ‘farewell’ events” that could result in large groups congregating and possibly igniting new infection clusters prior to mandatory closure when Friday begins.

Until Thursday night at midnight, venues are expected to continue implementing social-distancing measures, such as suspending events with more than 250 participants and making sure there is 1 meter of space between people. The warning came in a statement issued online today by the tourism board, police, and the Enterprise Singapore small business body.

During this time, we appeal to Singaporeans to exercise good judgement and social responsibility. This will play an important part in keeping fellow Singaporeans and our loved ones safe in the midst of this global pandemic,” the statement read.

Traffic police officers will also be deployed islandwide to catch drink-drivers.

All entertainment venues, including bars, nightclubs and karaoke outlets must close from midnight Friday night till the end of April as part of new measures to slow down spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Singapore has reported 558 infections so far, with most of the recent cases involving those who contracted the disease abroad.
