Scientists from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have found a method to instantaneously detect a ‘date rape’ drug, Gamma-Hydroxybutyric (GHB), or ‘liquid ecstacy’, which is commonly used to spike drinks.
The process involves using a flourescent dye which changes colour when mixed with the drug.
The scientists hope to combine the new technique with UV light — which best shows the reaction for dark-coloured drinks like whisky and wine — and work with designers to produce a commercial test kit that is portable and user-friendly within a year.
It takes just two to four grammes of ‘liquid ecstacy’, which is colourless and odourless, to induce victims into a deep sleep.
