Club bouncer charged for punching a patron who called him fat

Don’t call a bouncer fat. That’s what 28-year-old Desmond Loh did when he and a friend were barred from re-entering Club Sonar at Orchard Hotel. The incident, which happened on May 3 last year, escalated into violence when bouncer Yeo Tian Soon, 20, failed to reign in his anger, as reported by The New Paper. He initially allowed the pair into the club, but then asked Loh to leave, and refused him re-entrance.

Loh reportedly made a couple snide remarks, telling him, “You’re rejecting me entry ’cause you’re fat.” This provoked Yeo, who held a blue belt in taekwondo and often familiarized himself with self-defence videos.

So he hunted Loh down and found him at Club Aura, another party space in Orchard Hotel. Yeo then threw a series of punches at Loh’s face and nailed him to the ground, while his accomplice stopped Loh’s friend from intervening. No retaliation was made on Loh’s part.

After returning home and attempting to sleep, Loh woke up coughing blood and was taken to the hospital. It was later revealed that he had fractures on the left side of his face, and had to undergo reconstructive surgery, resulting in loss of sensation in that area and impaired vision.

Apparently, the vicious attack was a one-off act, but Loh’s serious injuries and two-month recovery period led to a call for probation and reformative training for Yeo, who is now in remand. Yesterday, he pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and a count of voluntarily causing hurt. He’s expected back in court on Apr 19 for sentencing.
