The Clash of Colours: White-clothed conservatives vs Pink Dot rally

This weekend, thousands of Christians will be clad in white in support of the traditional family unit as Hong Lim Park is decked out in pink tomorrow for the annual Pink Dot rally at Hong Lim Park that champions lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights. Besides the Christian community, some Muslims may also don white at mosques when Ramadhan comes around next week.

LoveSingapore has called on its network of about 100 churches to encourage their members to attend services over the weekend dressed in white. At least 15,000 people from 15 churches will be dressed in white this year, said network chairman and Faith Community Baptist Church senior pastor Lawrence Khong, in an interview with The Straits Times.

Pink Dot SG on the other hand aren’t troubled by the initiative. “We welcome any effort to strengthen family ties, and many of those who attend Pink Dot do so with family members who understand the need and importance of maintaining strong familial bonds,” they remarked to the paper.

Recently, they’ve also sent out invites to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and other political leaders in response to the PM’s dismaying remarks about keeping silent about LGBT issues in Singapore.

This year, several businesses along North Canal Road will distribute freebies and sell Pink Dot merchandise, granting people the flexibility to change their style because white is too bland a colour and pink is far more funkier.

While Pink Dot has seen growing support since it began in 2009 with just 2,500 participants which increased to about 26,000 last year, Singapore remains a largely conservative society. It’s unfortunate that wearing pink or white makes some see red, and it’s no longer just an expression of one’s favourite colour.
