For one Chinese Muslim convert, a Grab ride last Friday turned into an unexpected discussion session about faith and spirituality. Moved by the engaging experience, she took to Facebook this afternoon to write about how a stranger was so in tune with her beliefs.

Jinghan Naan, the founder of community blog The Radiant Muslim, wasn’t too surprised that the first question a Grab driver asked her was about her identity, presumably a frequent query since she’s a headscarf-wearing Muslim woman with a Chinese name. According to Naan, what was surprising was the fact that the Grab driver dove deep into the nature of spirituality, echoing her undisclosed sentiments about religion — and all without being a Muslim himself.

“His yearning to be in a place of spirituality far exceeded mine,” she wrote. “Uncle, of all the people I’ve met in my life, Muslims included, you’re the one whose every word, action and being just resonated with the desire to achieve closeness to God.”
