A police report has been lodged after the national flag of the People’s Republic of China was found proudly — and illegally — hanging from a window at a public housing estate in Choa Chu Kang this week.
In a statement to Coconuts Singapore, the Choa Chu Kang town council said they had informed the police about the flag after being informed by a concerned resident.
They have since taken the flag down, which reportedly made its first appearance on Monday, and will not comment further as a police investigation is underway, they said.
The flag was found hanging at Block 489B Choa Chu Kang Avenue 5.
Photos of the flag have been circulating on Facebook, almost since it first appeared, prompting another tired round of “Chinapore” jokes.
Under the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act, it’s illegal to publicly display the national flags of any state or country other than Singapore, with an obvious exemption for embassies and the like.
Those guilty of raising another country’s colors can be jailed for up to six months or fined up to S$500 (US$360), or both. And hey, who’d want to do that so close to National Day anyway?
