The 29-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his wife four times in Geylang on Saturday was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means in court yesterday.

Jayselan N Chandrasegar was said to have used a knife with a 10cm-long blade to stab 26-year-old Mayuri Krishnakumar twice in the abdomen and twice in the lower back. This resulted in her suffering puncture wounds in those areas, The Straits Times noted.

The scene, which was captured on video and circulated on social media, occurred at 11:47am on Saturday along Lorong 16 in Geylang. The police confirmed they received a report of the incident at 11:49am, and Jayselan was arrested at 12:15pm along Guillemard Road.

It is believed that Mayuri was walking with another individual and had just parted ways with the person when the incident happened, Channel NewsAsia reported. Jayselan stabbed her with the knife before he ran off.

The victim was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where she remains in stable condition, TODAY said.

As for Jayselan, the court heard that he suffers from depression and was a former patient at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). He will be remanded at IMH for two weeks for a psychiatric evaluation, and his case will be mentioned afterward.

After his charge was read to him, Jayselan commented: “Mayuri is my wife. For the mistake that she did, I admit that what I did to her was wrong.”

“I only stabbed her twice, not more than that. I did not think that I’ll do such a thing to my wife. I have a child at home, I couldn’t take it that she did this to me and my child,” he added.

If found guilty, he could be imprisoned for life or jailed up to 15 years; he could also be liable to a fine or caning.
