Changi Airport’s T5 to be the one of Singapore’s largest man-made structures

If VivoCity isn’t big enough, the future Terminal 5 will be sure to impress with it’s size.

In an exclusive interview with The Straits Times, Changi Airport Group’s (CAG) chairman Liew Mun Leong revealed that based on air traffic projections, Changi Airport’s future Terminal 5 is expected to be a five-storey-high, 10 million sq ft terminal. He said that one level of T5 is 2 million sq ft per floor, which is twice the size of VivoCity when it is collapsed and spread out.

Slated to open in 10 years, T5 is expected to receive up to 50 million passengers a year – more than T1 and T2 combined – and hopefully cement Singapore’s position as a key global hub for air travel.

Dubai Airport is reportedly planning to boost its annual handling capacity from 80 million to 250 million passengers while South Korea’s Incheon Airport is increasing from 80 million to 145 million passengers. Once completed, T5 is likely to take Changi to a whopping 140 million passengers a year and will possibly be the third largest passenger terminal in the world. Especially for a tiny country like Singapore, this is no mean feat.

This is a monumental sight to look forward to, but who will foot the bill for this multibillion-dollar project remains the billion dollar question.
