Unhappy Certis Cisco officers misappropriate close to $150,000

Two ex-Certis Cisco officers have been found guilty of misappropriating almost $150,000 after they were entrusted to replenish money at ATMs around the island.

27-year-old Theywa Subramaniam, also convicted of one count of moving the criminal proceeds to Malaysia and another count of moving more than $30,000 cash out of Singapore, will spend 36 months in jail while his accomplice 21-year-old Palwinder Singh A/L Harjan Singh will serve a 30-month sentence.

The crime was planned over tea break and commited at Plaza Singapura in September last year, in the midst of complaining about poor treatment from management employees.

While doing their rounds, the two men were caught on CCTV making a detour to the men’s toilet, where they took out $147,000 from the bags of cash they were carrying.

The defence counsel mitigated that $135,000 was recovered at Theywa’s Malaysian residence, and that his client was truly remorseful but District Judge Siva Shanmugam said that the pre-meditated acts involved a substantial amount.

Such an abuse of trust, he added, undermines public confidence in the security industry.
