It’s the dead lizard seen ‘round the net, today after a customer shared a photo showing a reptile body pinned beneath a freshly baked bun in his BreadTalk box.
It began with what appeared to be charred reptile remains shared in images yesterday along with some salty language written by its very alarmed author.
“Yo @breadtalksg WHAT THE FUCK THERE IS A FUCKING DEAD LIZARD INSIDE,” the Instagram caption read. It is not clear when exactly the incident happened.
The customer, who did not disclose their identity, said the company refused to take responsibility for the lizard because it had looked at surveillance footage and found no evidence it was their fault.
After this article was published, BreadTalk reached out to say they were informed yesterday about the incident, which happened Tuesday. They said pest control was called into the store, where they found “no signs and markings of lizards.”
It was the customer’s mother who had bought the box of breakfast buns from the Tai Seng outlet, where BreadTalk’s headquarters is also located, the post said. The customer later found the “black” and “a little burnt” lizard in the box after his mother and sibling took their share.
After posting about it online, the customer said that BreadTalk reached out to say its CCTV footage “showed that the box did not contain the lizard.” The Instagrammer refuted that the box of buns had been sealed until the family started to dig in.
BreadTalk, in its statement today, sounded pretty sure the lizard didn’t come from its store.
“Based on information provided by the customer, the purchase was made the day before on 2 February,” it said in a statement. “Our footage from the CCTV of the outlet shows that the buns were packed at the counter upon order. In addition, we hired a third-party pest control company to inspect the outlet and the report shows that there are no signs and markings of lizards.”
In the original post, the customer said he thought the company didn’t handle it well.
“Ok honestly like it’s not even about the compensation or anything but the entire matter was handled poorly I feel like the only thing they care about is their own image,” the Instagrammer added. The customer later claimed that BreadTalk had asked for the Instagram posts to be removed and asked whether the family still kept the lizard.
