Come July 1, companies and brands across the nation will be rushing and stumbling over themselves to offer special deals to NSmen as part of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day 2015.
The list of retailers involved in the SAF Day promo campaign are extensive, to the point of seeming kind of overblown. Bigwig companies such as Burger King, Eighteen Chefs, Charles & Keith, Island Creamery, Resorts World Sentosa and a lot more have all readied their special deals offered only to SAF personnel.
“Every day, thousands of SAF personnel carry out their duties diligently to defend Singapore,” says Mindef in one of their ads. “On SAF Day 2015, we want to thank all of you for your service”.

It’s all decent and noble for the thousands of military personnel who have clearly served their nation well, but it does seem a little unfair to the forgotten agencies who’ve actually been directly interacting and serving the nation day in and day out — the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF).
Though the Home Team have been the ones risking their lives every day to keep crime off the streets as well as always being there to rescue those in need, not much has been arranged — yet — to appreciate their similarly upstanding work and efforts to keep Singapore safe.
Surely it’s past time for the country to start showing their appreciation to the thankless jobs carried out by SCDF and SPF, instead of simply berating them on social media and criticising their personnel. Maybe they too deserve some special deals and promos that would be a gesture of thanks for their own diligent duties.
