Brace yourselves for possible additional screening checks at Changi Airport

Going on holiday? When you arrive back at Changi Airport, you may be subjected to more than one passport check in the future. In a bid to enhance security, several randomly-chosen travellers who landed at Changi Airport Terminal 3 over the last few months had their photos taken and their passports checked after they got off the airplane. Then they went through the regular immigration checks before picking up their luggages.

Random checks after arrival aren’t a new implementation — although they are rather rare at Changi Airport — but they have been usually limited to bag checks and metal detector screenings. This additional screening was part of a trial (that ended last month) by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority to enhance surveillance and check the passports of passengers on particular flights against Interpol’s database of stolen and lost travel documents.

According to The Straits Times, ICA did not elaborate on whether it will eventually implement such checks for all arriving passengers.
