A Singapore Armed Forces serviceman was found dead at the multistory car park of the Gombak military base yesterday afternoon. His body was hanging by a rope.

The Ministry of Defence revealed this in a late-night press statement, adding that no foul play was suspected and that a police investigation was underway. The unnamed 47-year-old was pronounced dead at 1:39pm.

“Based on the preliminary investigations, the Police do not suspect foul play. They have classified the case as unnatural death and investigations are ongoing,” the statement said.

Similar deaths have happened in Singapore’s army camps before. A serviceman from the military’s Medical Training Institute was believed to have hung himself in his bunk at Nee Soon Camp. A 51-year-old warrant officer was also found dead by hanging at the Lentor training area in 2013.

“The Ministry of Defence and the SAF extend our deepest condolences to the family of the late serviceman, and are assisting the family in their time of grief,” the ministry added.
