BMW driver arrested for crashing and killing cardboard auntie at Collyer Quay

In a physical representation of class struggles, a BMW knocked down and killed a cardboard auntie.

Tan Powi Kim had been handing cardboard boxes to her husband at the back of his lorry when a black BMW crashed into her before colliding with the vehicle on Saturday morning along Collyer Quay. The New Paper reports that the 62-year-old later died after being rushed to the Singapore General Hospital.

Collecting cardboard and picking up recyclable materials had been the elderly couple’s weekend routine for a decade already. Their lorry had been parked at a loading bay near the OUE Link Bridge that fateful morning, and they were almost done loading cardboard onto the vehicle when tragedy struck at 6.50am.

The husband — 68-year-old Cheng Kiat Yan — had climbed into the back of his lorry, while his wife stood on the road behind the vehicle, handing him cardboard boxes. The crash caused him to fall off the lorry, resulting in a fractured knee.

His wife however, fared even worse. Cheng got up to see the woman lying on the bonnet of the car, while the dazed BMW driver simply stood beside his car in shock.

The couple were taken to the Singapore General Hospital later on, where Cheng received treatment for a fractured left kneecap. Tan died from her injuries.

The 45-year-old BMW driver was arrested for negligent act causing death, says the police. Tan’s children and family were absolutely devastated by the death — her youngest and only son doesn’t even want to know who the driver is and simply hopes that justice would be carried out.
