A 27-year-old Malaysian casino worker was sentenced to three months in jail and fined $10,000 or one month in jail yesterday for misdeclaring his sexual history when he donated blood to the Health Science Authority’s Blood Services Group in Nov 2014.
Almost two months later, it was discovered that the blood was contaminated with HIV.
The defense laywer said his client had no ulterior motive and unfortunately didn’t pay attention to the question. It had been five years since the blood donor had his last encounter — when he had a two- to three-week affair with someone in Singapore in 2009, reports The Straits Times.
“He is truly regretful and remorseful. He has and continues to be punished that he has this incurable disease and embarked on treatment to control it,” the lawyer said.
