Blogger and activist Roy Ngerng just added another $1,800 to the money he owes people

Former MP hopeful Roy Ngerng, who keeps finding himself mired in controversy, pleaded guilty today to being a public nuisance and organising a demonstration without approval. Courts fined him $1,900 — wherever is he going to get money to pay that plus the $29,000 in legal costs he owes the Prime Minister

The guy has a knack for grandstanding and that was clearly obvious in September 2014 when, with fellow blogger Han Han Hui and four other friends, he crashed YMCA’s charity carnival at Hong Lim Park and as of his #ReturnOurCPF campaign.

To be fair, they had their own permit to hold a rally at Speaker’s Corner. Ngerng and co. were upset that they had to share the space with the carnival, and insisted on having a prominent space for their protest.

Instead of staking a claim to their own patch of the turf, they marched around YMCA’s area and as soon as the guest of honor (then Minister of State for Trade and Industry Teo Ser Luck) arrived, Ngerng and his posse started waving flags, beating drums, blowing whistles, chanting slogans and shouting loudly. Apparently, it even scared a troupe of special needs kids about to perform on stage.

In court today, Ngerng’s lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam claimed that his client “did not know that separate approval was required for a demonstration, after he had already obtained approval to hold an event at the Park,” reports Channel NewsAsia. “His offence is ignorance,” he added.

Last time we heard, ignorance of the law excuses no one.
