Big problems for PRs who ‘siam’ National Service

Permanent Residents (PRs) who fail to register or enlist for National Service (NS) will be charged under the Enlistment Act, Channel NewsAsia reports.

This was announced by Singapore’s defence minister Dr. Ng Eng Hen in a written Parliament reply to NMP Eugene Tan yesterday.

Dr. Ng revealed that NS defaulters will be subjected to a fine or jail term if found guilty. Those who give up their citizenship before serving NS face serious repercussions with regards to future endeavours in Singapore.

NS-liable PRs who’ve renounced their citizenship in the past are known to have not been granted study or work in Singapore in the last decade, as a reinforcement of the policy. Past records also show that no reinstatement of PR or citizenship has been granted to offenders.

It was also revealed that those who’ve already broken the rules may put their applications for renewal of immediate family members’ Re-Entry Permits at a disadvantage.
