Apparently, there’s an email regarding tax refunds making the rounds impersonating the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS). The scam, which may contain a computer virus, asks recipients to either download an attachment or click on a link to see their tax refunds.
The tax authority took to Facebook today to warn members of the public against falling for the email scam. An advisory on its website stated that there have been reported cases of scammers pretending to be from IRAS and sending emails, letters and texts or making phone calls to the public.
Such ploys usually work by getting people to transfer money for tax purposes to other accounts, or providing bank account numbers for tax refund claims, cash rewards or to pay outstanding taxes. Other methods include getting people to disclose their personal information or making them pay money before an inheritance or estate of a deceased person is released.
Just keep in mind that IRAS doesn’t send official emails from personal accounts, neither will it ever ask for personal particulars via email. If you find yourself the recipient of such suspicious emails, letters, phone calls or texts, contact the authorities.
