Sad news, guys. Everyone’s favourite (and only) Coney Island cow has passed on. The National Parks Boards (NParks) said yesterday that the free-roaming Brahman bull was sedated for blood and fecal samples during its annual health check by vets on September 28, and could not be revived afterwards.
Basically, the cow died two weeks ago. And we’re only finding out now because of post-mortem investigations by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority, which concluded that the animal was suffering from chronic underlying illnesses. Seems like it most likely breathed its last due to heart and lung complications while sedated.
‘Health checks are necessary for the cow’s own well being and for public health reasons, for example, to prevent the spread of diseases between animals and humans. Given its large size, sedating the cow was a standard procedure to ensure the safety of all personnel involved,’ NParks announced, presumably to back up its actions in anticipation of public backlash.
‘The cow was a recognizable part of Coney Island Park and will be missed,’ declared the statement.
No truer words were ever spoken. Just look through the onslaught of comments by netizens (and yes, Harambe was mentioned).
Then there’s this practical guy.
