Bar owner inadvertently sold alcohol illegally because SingPost allegedly sent his license renewal notice late

Mailing woes continue for Singapore Post customers even after the national postal service provider issued multiple apologies for lapses in its service standards over the past couple of months. From parcels and letters simply trashed in a bin to missed deliveries — SingPost can’t get a break from national condemnation.

Daniel Goh, a prominent veteran of the local bar scene, illustrated how SingPost’s recent blunders might have landed him in big trouble with the police. A co-owner of two beer joints (Smith Street Taps and The Good Beer Company), he realized that he inadvertently sold booze to customers without a license for a month. According to him, he was only aware that he needed to renew his liquor license (for an unspecified stall) after he received a notice from the Singapore Police Force four months late. Yikes.

Goh wrote in a Facebook post that it was only yesterday that he received the official notice which was dated Sept 6, 2018. He was supposed to have complied to the notice and renew his liquor license by Dec 4 last year — but he wasn’t aware of it only until last night.

“This essentially means we have been selling alcohol illegally for the past month without even knowing,” he wrote.

“We could be shut down any time if the police come checking. Heck, we may never be allowed to operate and sell beer ever again, all because SingPost took FOUR MONTHS to deliver an official letter from a government authority.”

Commenting on Goh’s post, a representative from SingPost confirmed that the notice was only processed on Wednesday. Investigations are being carried out for Goh.

As for the bar proprietor, he indicated that he’ll sort the matter out with Singapore Police Force directly, but he’ll have his lawyers ready in case the issue escalates.

Goh couldn’t resist putting in a jibe about SingPost’s allegedly glacial pace in delivery.

“I leopard crawl from Police Cantonment Complex to my home also won’t take one month.”

Not all SingPost’s fault

Folks pointed out that the blame can’t be pinned squarely on SingPost — it could be an error on the Singapore Police Force’s side too. Of course, Goh himself is not without fault as well.
