When Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel responded to a call at a waste collection centre along Bedok Reservoir Road, it was a grisly find — a man crushed in the refuse compactor.
37-year-old Bangladeshi cleaner Ali had been operating the waste compacting machine on Monday when it malfunctioned. Lianhe Wanbao reports that he had tried to kick the machine but he must have gotten snagged and was rolled into the compactor.
SCDF personnel who responded that morning found the man “inside the refuse compactor of the centralised refuse chute with no pulse and no breathing”.
CPR was performed on him on-site and en-route to Changi General Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving behind a wife and three children.
Investigations are currently ongoing.
Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) chairman Pritam Singh expressed his grief for the tragedy and extended condolences to the family of the deceased. In a Facebook post, Singh assured that everything has been arranged for the repatriation and burial of Ali with the appropriate Islamic rites, along with funeral prayer sessions at a mosque in Eunos.
