Bali shark attack victim to be transferred to Raffles Hospital tomorrow for further treatment

Despite getting intensive care at Bali’s Kasih Ibu Tabanan Hospital, shark attack victim Ryan Boarman was transferred to Singapore for further care, with the pain proving too much for the 26-year-old American.

The American surfer was out catching waves in Balian, West Bali on Monday when a shark bit his arm near the elbow, tearing through muscle, all the way down to the bone.

Boarman’s friends and onlookers helped stabilize him and get him to a local hospital — after Boarman himself was amazingly able to surf back into the beach following the bite. Legendary.

Over $20,000 has been raised on a crowdfunding page set up to help Balian shark attack victim Ryan Boarman pay for his mounting medical costs not covered by insurance, as well as transferring him to Singapore for further treatment. His family did say that leftover funds — if any — will be donated to local charities in Bali that Boarman selects.

The latest update confirms that Boarman will be transferred to Raffles Hospital tomorrow, where he will be re-evaluated to see if requires any more surgeries. The end goal is to get him to a hospital in his hometown San Diego once he’s stable enough.

While the island of Bali is not known for sharks, attacks are not unheard of in the Balian Beach area. American expat Eddie Biancardi told surfing site Stab Magazine that this is the fifth shark attack in five years at this West Bali beach.
