Bad Business: 17-year-old girl on probation for blogshop scam

17-year-old Hock Jing Er was sentenced to 36 months probation today, Nov. 15, for scamming over SGD10,800 from more than 100 people on Facebook.

According to Channel NewsAsia, this was done through a fake blogshop set up between May and June of 2012, under the pretense of selling items like contact lens and polaroid cameras.

Together with a partner Goh Yin Hui, Hock would source pictures of goods they pretended to have in stock on the internet and display them on their blogshop’s Facebook page.

When the delivery dateline was up, Hock would deactivate the blogshop’s Facebook page.

Goh backed out halfway, but has also been placed under probation.

Besides this Facebook incident, Hock also admitted to two other charges: stealing cosmetics from a John Little store at Causeway Point in 2009 and being part of an unlawful assembly in 2010.

District Judge Lim Keng Yeow said she is remorseful and has the heart to change for the better.

On top of the probation, Hock will need to perform 240 hours of community service under a SGD5,000 bond.
