With geek culture becoming more and more the norm these days mainly due to Marvel Comics’ renaissance on film and TV, comic book creators are the new rockstars of pop culture today.
We now have a rockstar to call our own — Singaporean comic artist Sonny Liew is now in charge of illustrating DC Comics’ new series featuring magical superhero Doctor Fate, due to launch in June.
Liew — who got his first comic published in The New Paper during the ’90s — got the job through the former president of DC Comics Paul Levitz, whom he met at a Comic-Con event here a few years ago, according to The Straits Times.
The artist was at first hesitant to take on the job, which would entail him to churn out one book every month. He was also surprised that DC Comics wanted him to work on the new incarnation of Doctor Fate as his illustrations seemed more suited to indie titles instead of the mainstream, superhero-focused comics.
This would now be the first time the Eisner-nominated artist had a hand in fleshing out major superheroes — he illustrated Iron Man for Marvel’s Marvel Universe Millennial Visions title.
With the first issue of the new Doctor Fate series completed, Liew is already starting work on the second issue. He’ll be conducting a book signing at Absolute Comics in Plaza Singapura shopping mall on June 19, as well as Holland Village’s Wonderistic Comics on June 27.
