AVA rules out animal cruelty for 7 of the reported cat deaths in Yishun

Despite the scare of a potential cat killer (and copycat killers) lurking the troubled district of Yishun, the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) aren’t convinced about that reality.

Channel NewsAsia reports that AVA’s investigations so far have ruled out animal cruelty for seven out of the 26 cats found dead in Yishun since last September. The seven cats’ death were attributed to non-abuse reasons such as natural causes and traffic accidents

Meanwhile, the remaining 19 of the reported cases remain open, with no clear sign of abuse. However, AVA will not write them off as they won’t conclude the case without eye-witnesses or conclusive proof.

Some community groups pointed out that some of the cats were poisoned, but AVA found no evidence of such in their laboratory post-mortems.

So far, two suspects have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the spate of cat killings that struck (and is still striking) Yishun. Lee Wai Leong was accused of throwing a cat from the 13th floor of a HDB block, while another man — from the household that owned one of the dead cats — was arrested last week.
