Heads up – liquor licensing hours at Tekka Food Centre will be reduced, come August 1. Its current hours for the sale and consumption of liquor are 6am to midnight on Sundays, but the end time will soon be shortened to 6pm.
According to the police, feedback was received from the public about groups of people drinking alcohol on Sunday evenings. The police claimed this would have a negative effect on other patrons having dinner at the Little India food centre, and that could “pose law and order risks”. Other contributing factors include the occasional brawl and diners having trouble finding seats on Sunday evenings.
Residents, grassroots, business owners and other agencies were brought into the discussion before the final decision was made.
Ten liquor licensees will be affected by the new hours, and several have written in about the new rule, while one official appeal has been lodged with the Liquor Appeal Board. Many stall owners say this change will adversely affect them, as business is usually bustling on Sunday evenings.
