Someone’s plan to smuggle a buttload of cigarettes into Singapore just went up in smoke.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority says it’s foiled an attempt to import a total of 4,050 cartons of contraband cigarettes ‘as well as 150 bundles each containing approximately 1kg of unmanufactured tobacco’ from a Malaysia-registered prime mover on Sep 5.
The vehicle, driven by a 42-year-old Malaysian, was declared to be carrying a consignment of ‘662 boxes of electrolytic capacitors’. It was directed for further checks upon arrival at Tuas Checkpoint.
If declared, taxes for the goods would have amounted to over $419,000.
The driver, smuggled items, and vehicle were handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigations. The vehicle will likely be forfeited, according to ICA.
