Asshat Toyota driver who caused MCE bike crash had been using mobile phone while driving

A lot has been said about the incident in which an asshat driver left a motorcyclist and his wife tumbling for quite some distance at the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) before speeding away — all of which was captured in a harrowing dashcam footage that has gone viral online

While some may have put the blame squarely on the motorcyclist for trying to overtake the Toyota car, The New Paper has revealed some details in an interview that should make things pretty clear from that blurry footage.

26-year-old Muhd Siddiq biker and his 25-year-old wife Siti Zafirah — both nurses — had been heading to Siti’s mother’s home in Pasir Ris last Wednesday evening and encountered the vexing driver at the MCE. The Toyota Altis braked suddenly upon their approach, forcing Siddiq to jam the brakes on his bike hard to avoid a collision.

He later found out why — the driver was using his mobile phone while driving, and was appeared to be visibly distracted.

Angered, Siddiq then honked at the driver to alert him. The Toyota driver then retaliated by doing what Singaporean road ragers do best — playing the braking game.

The biker then tried to overtake the Toyota through the space in between it and another car on the left, but as everyone saw in the video, the car driver swerved to the left and braked again, causing the crash. Both Siddiq and his wife took a tumble, and the car sped away. The biker sprained his left wrist while Siti got the brunt of it  when she was left with multiple abrasions on her hand and legs. Her wounds require new dressing every alternate day, and will only fully recover after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The man who caught the whole thing on footage —  British national Andrew James Manktelow — had been travelling with his wife and children when the accident occurred. He managed to stop his car in time and helped both Siddiq and his wife. He didn’t take down the licence plate number of the offending vehicle as he believed that the video footage would capture it. Unfortunately, the video quality was too muddy to even make out the licence plate.

Siddiq has since lodged a police report, with Manktelow accompanying him at the police station. Investigations are currently ongoing.

Internet vigilantes, we call upon thee to avenge them.
