On Saturday (Aug 26), an Indonesian man was arrested at the Causeway for attempting to enter Singapore illegally. According to Channel NewsAsia, the Police Coast Guard spotted the 47-year-old walking between water pipelines along the Causeway towards Singapore, and alerted the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) at Woodlands Checkpoint around 7:30pm.
ICA officers and the Coast Guard found the man hiding under the pipelines with a “cylindrical flotation device”. He was immediately arrested.
“Security checks are critical to our nation’s security,” said ICA. “We will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints and our maritime border to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands.”
Anyone convicted of overstaying or illegal entry can get a jail term of up to six months and at least three strokes of the cane.
Investigations are underway.
