A 51-year-old driver has been arrested after his car crashed into a market in Marine Parade on Saturday afternoon, injuring three people in the process. According to a police statement, the incident occurred around 12:30pm at Block 50A Marine Terrace, and three casualties — aged 30 to 50 — were taken to Changi General Hospital.

The driver had lost control of his car — which had two passengers in it at the time — and drove up the kerb. Eyewitnesses relayed to Channel NewsAsia that the vehicle had reversed into a tree at the car park before it accelerated and rammed into a florist stall at the market.

It is believed that he was not drink driving, and that the vehicle may have experienced a mechanical fault, TODAY noted.

The three people injured included 58-year-old Yeo Lee Eng, the florist of Eileen Flower Shop, her male assistant in his 60s known as Toh Cheng Hai, and an Indonesian domestic helper who was buying flowers.

Yeo’s 36-year-old daughter told The Straits Times that her mother was unconscious when she was taken to the hospital, but she has since woken up.

In a truly Singaporean twist of events, one netizen present at the scene noted that the crowd was “whispering 4D numbers” after the accident, leading the police to cover up the car’s licence plate with boxes.

The aftermath of the scene saw workers from the Town Council cleaning up the shop space, which was littered with flower petals, soil, and shattered glass from a broken refrigerator.

The police confirmed that they were notified of the incident at 12:34pm. Investigations are ongoing.
