Making a bomb threat is no joking matter, as one 60-year-old man found out when he joked about having an explosive in his possession at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday (Aug 26). It is believed that he was attending a concert by Mandopop singer Wakin Chau with his wife and friends, when he was asked if he had a water bottle with him while going through a standard security check.
The man replied that he had a bomb.
Unfortunately, nobody thought it was funny at all. A Cisco security officer who overheard the exchange questioned the man about his comment, and the man said it was his frustration over being unable to bring water into the concert arena that prompted him to make the joke, reported TODAY. Joke’s on him though, because they called the cops on him.
In a statement on Sunday, the police said they were alerted by a security personnel at 7:32pm that a man was detained for his false bomb threat. Officers from the Bedok Police Division responded to the case and arrested him under Regulation 8(1) of the United Nations (Anti-Terrorism Measures) Regulations.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had no intention or means to make his threat a reality.
If found guilty, the man could be slapped with a jail term of up to five years, a maximum fine of $100,000, or both.
This is actually the second false bomb threat in a week. On Wednesday (Aug 23), a 17-year-old teen — believed to be mentally unwell — was arrested for claiming he was a terrorist armed with a bomb. In a viral clip capturing him in the act, he can be seen screaming phrases like “I am a terrorist” and “I want to die”.
For creating a ruckus at the Boon Lay bus interchange, he was arrested for causing a public nuisance.
