US-based fitness chain Anytime Fitness, which beat even 7-Eleven and Subway to rank first on Entrepreneur‘s 35th Annual Franchise 500 list, is aiming to set up 100 24-hour neighbourhood gyms in Singapore in the next five years.
The franchise-based business already owns 2,400 fitness clubs in 16 countries and aims to open 4,000 clubs in the United States and worldwide respectively.
In an interview with The Straits Times, company president Dave Mortensen said the company saw that consumers were lacking in community-based facilities focused solely on fitness and wellness, stripping out other facilities like swimming pools that will cost the guest more.
Anytime Fitness already has a gym in Singapore, located at the Ace The Place community club in Woodlands.
The company plans to have one in MacPherson Community Club ready by the end of the month and will continue to target high-density housing areas such as HDB estates, working with organisations like the People’s Association to realise this.
Said Anytime Fitness’ master franchisee Maurice Levine, “something in the order of 30 percent of Singaporeans live sedentary, non-active lifestyles”. He said this, not other gyms, is the real challenge for the company.
