Finally, another suspect behind the series of disturbing cat killings in Yishun has been arrested after over 20 alleged cases of such brutality have been reported since last September.
The 51-year-old suspect was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to a joint statement made by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) and the Singapore Police Force.
On Friday evening, both police and AVA officers conducted investigations after receiving a report of a cat carcass found on the grass verge next to Block 116 along Yishun Ring Road. The suspect’s identity was established soon after — he is from the household that owned that dead cat.
He was arrested for the offence of animal cruelty, and investigations are currently ongoing to establish if he is involved in the other cases of cat deaths in Yishun.
The man is the second suspect to be arrested in relation to the spate of cat abuse that have transpired across the Yishun district. The first suspect — 40-year-old Lee Wai Leong — was charged with tossing a tabby cat from the 13th floor of Block 115B along the very same Yishun Ring Road stretch. Lee was remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for psychological assessment and has a lawyer working pro bono for him, courtesy of Law Minister K Shanmugam.
AVA has also noted that not all of the reported cases in Yishun were due to animal cruelty. A recent case of a cat found dead next to a petrol station along Yishun Avenue 5 was said to have been more likely a road accident.
“AVA will look into all public feedback on animal cruelty and take enforcement actions against those who have committed acts of animal cruelty”, they wrote.
“We urge the public who have any information on animal cruelty cases, such as photographs, video evidence or witnesses, to contact AVA at 1800-4761600.”
