Teen blogger and convicted rabble-rouser Amos Yee is currently serving out his jail sentence (of two weeks) for wounding religious feelings (again) — but this time it seems like he’s facing active hostility.
Non-governmental organisation Community Action Network (CAN) has been closely following the activities of the 17-year-old since he started serving his sentence on Oct 13. They were the ones who noted that Yee was transferred from Changi Prison to Tanah Merah Prison last Saturday.
CAN renewed their calls to #freeAmosYee when they were informed that Yee was allegedly threatened and physically roughed up in his new penitentiary.
“We have also been informed that he has been threatened, slapped on the back and kicked while he was climbing up the stairs,” they wrote on Facebook. “Amos’ mother has put in an urgent request for Amos to be moved to Home Detention.”
Things might have gotten a little racial as well. The teenager seems to be troubled by the fact that Tanah Merah Prison has “mostly Malay youths” — which could pose a problem due to Yee’s long-winded criticism of Islam on his YouTube page. That very video was the reason he landed himself in jail in the first place.
CAN also updated today that Amos is sticking with his Chinese cellmates during their daily outdoor sessions, and is not mixing with other inmates. Not much else is known for now. but we’ll surely hear no end of what the enfant terrible went through in jail when he gets out and puts himself in front of the camera.
