Universal Studios stuntman dies from traumatic head injury sustained in bar fight at Boat Quay

A night out at Boat Quay with friends on Christmas Eve led to a severely tragic outcome for a Universal Studios Singapore stuntman.

30-year-old American citizen John Denley Nelson succumbed to a traumatic head injury following a bar fight at Boat Quay. He was said to have been punched before losing consciousness and fell, hitting his head on the concrete curb.

News of his passing was announced on crowdfunding site gofundme, where his friend Melissa Broughton set up a campaign to collect donations for his medical bills. $30,833 were collected as of writing.

According to Broughton, Nelson and his friends came to the aid of his female colleague who was punched in the face during a bar fight. It was then that an assailant came from behind and “sucker punched” Nelson, causing him to hit his head on the curb. He was left with a traumatic head injury with excessive swelling of the brain.

His parents flew over to Singapore to be by his side in hospital, as he remained in critical condition in an induced coma. On New Year’s Day however, Nelson passed away.

“John has touched the lives of many of us through ski clubs, ski shows, stunt shows, his family, his faith, and by being the incredible guy he is,” Broughton wrote on the campaign page. “He was kind, gentle, fun, caring and one of the most amazing guys that we all have had the pleasure of walking this earth with.”

The New Paper reports that a man in his 20s was arrested and charged with rioting — though that might change in accordance to Nelson’s death.
