In light of the recent Resorts World Sentosa retrenchment exercise, where about 400 jobs out of 12,000 were laid off, the Ministry of Manpower is looking into complaints and appeals by former employees against the integrated resort’s casino. The workers reported alleged discrimination, unfair dismissals and insufficient compensation.
Some appeals have been dismissed due to various reasons, but others are being examined by MOM, especially those where employees covered under the Employment Act received a monthly salary below $4,500.
It seems several former RWS employees claimed foreigners were able to keep their jobs in RWS, while Singaporeans were let go. The company even put out an ad in Malaysia to attract casino staff, offering salaries in Singapore dollar terms — but that was later taken down.
According to TODAY, one worker who complained to MOM said, “We were fired on the spot without any satisfactory explanation on how individuals were chosen for the job cuts. The company’s Performance Level Assessment programme is unfair.”
MOM is waiting for RWS to clarify how it conducted the layoffs and its process of compiling the list of retrenched employees.
