All National Servicemen to be covered by life and personal accident insurance from July 1

For all full-time and operationally ready National Servicemen in the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force — the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs will cover the cost of life and personal accident insurance for you, starting from July 1. According to the ministries, the reason behind this initiative is to “better recognise the contributions of National Servicemen to national defence and security, and to strengthen our care for them”.

The group insurance coverage was announced in April, alongside other ways to increase recognition of NSmen such as better SAFRA facilities and gifts and vouchers. Under the insurance scheme, the ministries will pay the total cost for the premiums of $150,000 in group term life and $150,000 in group personal accident coverage for the servicemen’s full-time and operationally ready NS duties. This will also extend to regulars during their employment and volunteers during their official duties from both ministries.

As for whether this comes in response to the increased risk of accidents during servicemen training, Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs Vikram Nair said the scheme is a recognition of servicemen’s contributions and a way to reassure them and their families by providing a level of coverage should something happen.
