Last night’s Star Awards Show 1 may have been a star-studded gathering of famous TV celebs in Singapore, but all eyes were on one person — Rui En. The actress, who recently made headlines for her involvement in a drink-driving incident, had released a statement a couple days before the awards ceremony in an attempt to explain her side of the story. While the 35-year-old declined to speak with the media before the show, she was open and honest with the public after she received her All-Time Favourite Artiste award.
Addressing her recent controversy, Rui En looked visibly humbled and contrite as she held back tears and apologised continuously to the audience. The usually cool and aloof “ice queen” delivered her speech in Mandarin, asking for forgiveness and thanking her fans for their “unconditional love” over the past 14 years. Acknowledging the award as a milestone moment in her career, she declared that to be a good actress, she had to present her best self to the public. She also wondered out loud if she was suited for showbiz, given her straightforward nature and the fact that she doesn’t mask her emotions.
Rui En explained that she was unable to comment on the case to the media, as it is still under investigation, but apologised for all the inconvenience she caused. At the end of her speech, she backed away from the microphone and gave a deep bow.
