Drama over the Thaipusam scuffle marches on, and this time a politician is being accused of sedition — the very offence that got the people behind The Real Singapore in trouble earlier this month.
According to The Online Citizen, Singaporean film-maker and political activist Martyn See has filed a police report against the Minister of State for Health and Member of Parliament Dr. Lam Pin Min for offences committed under the Sedition Act and sub judice contempt of court.
In a Facebook post on Feb 4, Dr. Lam posted a link to a blog as a comment to the Thaipusam altercation between the authorities and civilians, insinuating that alcohol intoxication lead to the skirmish.
However, it was found out that the fight had allegedly started because of urumi drummers who continued to play on despite being warned about the public ban on musical instruments during the procession. Three men are currently facing charges that include behaving in a disorderly manner and voluntarily causing hurt to a police officer.
The Attorney-General’s Chambers also issued a warning to all to refrain from making any public criticism or comment about the ongoing case as it may affect the judicial process.
See has since made a report against Dr Lam, whose comments may be effectively considered sub judice contempt of court. He has also claimed that the minister has also “incited enmity towards the Hindu community by stating as fact that devotees were intoxicate while participating in the holy festival of Thaipusam.”
Dr. Lam has not issued a response over the police report.
