46 exotic animals including tortoises, turtles and a green iguana were released into their new home in the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society’s (ACRES) new wildlife sanctuary, which was officially opened on Nov. 14.
Constructed by more than 100 volunteers over the course of six months, the 300 sq. m. wildlife sanctuary located in Jalan Lekar is designed to improve the living conditions of the animals.
The sanctuary will also provide more space for these creatures as compared to the quarantine area, which has seen its capacity filled completely.
According to TODAY, Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee said that he knows more Singaporeans are aware of issues regarding animal welfare these days and is encouraged by the efforts put in by animal welfre groups like ACRES in public outreach and education initiatives.
He also added that the government will aid initiatives like these and is delighted to assist ACRES in setting up the wildlife facility.
