A-List Stars Invade Singapore: AI-powered Instagram account imagines celebs in local scenarios

Imagine a Singapore where John Cena is your neighborhood ice cream man or Keanu Reeves is the handsome ah beng at the handphone shop.

Thanks to Midjourney, this fantastical world exists on the Instagram account @singapore_spotting

Like the made-up Mr Midnight horror stories we concocted as well as our feature on how AI perceives Singaporeans, the recently set-up account uses the AI-powered image generator to imagine with local and very familiar scenarios but with international celebrities at the center of them.

Some of the best images features Snoop Dogg and Ariana Granda eating a sandwich by the Singapore River with in a grainy, dreamy filter, Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock hanging out at Hong Lim Park for Pinkdot, and Zac Efron giving some attention to a community cat after a run in the heartlands.

On top of that, the witty, oddly specific captions makes each post even better.

Take for example, a pic of ex-lovers Taylor Swift and Harry Styles “drinking guinness at clarke quay but got too much foam” and one of Timothee Chalamet who “go eyebrow threading at rupinis”. Every post is a gem.

Of course, the idea itself is not original. Indonesian account @indra.hakim has been putting up photoshopped images of celebrities as working-class Indonesians for years – but hey, we’re happy to have a Singaporean version now too.

Who would you like to see next? We have some ideas too – Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet making their first appearance as a couple at The Projector Intermission Bar, Selena Gomez doing her makeup on the train (using Rare Beauty, of course), and Tom Holland and Zendaya on a date at Kampong Gelam Cafe.
