Eight men aged 18 to 33 years have been arrested for setting off an improvised explosive device constructed from sparklers, commonly known as the ‘sparkler rocket’.
At about 10:20pm on Aug. 1, a few days after the start of the Muslim eid celebration, officers from the Jurong Police Division responded to a report of a fire at Woodlands Drive 50. Upon arrival, the officers spotted burnt marks on the ground, as well as a bundle of used sparklers.
Following a check and an interview, eight men found within the vicinity were placed under arrest for negligent conduct with respect to an explosive substance.
Investigations are currently ongoing, but if convicted, each man faces up to one year in jail or a maximum $5,000 fine, or both.
According to the Singapore Police Force, a total of 14 similar cases, where 62 people were arrested, have been reported since July this year.
