Does this mean we’ll be seeing more cyclists on the road soon?
A month-long survey recently conducted by the Land Transport Authority reveals that Singaporeans are cool with sharing spaces — whether that’s road space or foot and cycling paths — with groups who were not originally meant to use them.
Results from the nationwide poll that gathered 5,000 responses reveal that 7 out of 10 motorists are open to sharing road space with cyclists.
It also showed that 2 out of 3 are open to sharing footpaths with cyclists and non-motorised personal mobility devices; 1 out of 2 will share footpaths with motorised bicycles and motorised personal mobility devices, and 7 out of 10 respondents will share cycling paths and park connectors with motorised bicycles and motorised personal mobility devices.
Sharing is caring, right?
Interested survey respondents have been asked to participate in focus group discussions that will last until December.
Participants will also go through an experiential role-playing segment where they will assume different roles, such as being a pedestrian, a cyclist or a user of personal mobility device. Fun.
The objective, explains LTA, is to consider the perspectives of different user groups. It will also help facilitate more in-depth and meaningful discussions on the appropriate rules and norms to facilitate safe and harmonious sharing of paths.
