6 weeks jail for young South Korean man who went on casino chip stealing spree at MBS

Yet another Danny Ocean wannabe bites the dust — a young South Korean student has been jailed for stealing $6,300 worth of chips from several patrons of the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) casino over the course of a month.

22-year-old You Hyeon Ho has been facing serious emotional instability due to his family’s deteriorating state of finances after his father’s bankruptcy, Channel NewsAsia reports. Their financial situation forced his parents and younger sister to make an abrupt departure from Singapore, leaving You and his younger brother to survive on their own here.

Feeling depressed, the young Singapore Management University student decided to go on an elaborate stealing spree at the MBS Casino in October last year. He would head down to the Sic-Bo tables and shift or remove other gamblers’ wagers from the betting boxes just before the results of a game.

The jig was up however when his surreptitious sleight of hand resulted in a patron losing the game; he was later caught and referred the matter to the police.

In court, You pleaded guilty to 27 counts of theft of casino chips, while 245 other charges were taken into consideration in his sentencing. Though his lawyer argued that You’s errors of judgement had been out of character, the District Judge noted that he displayed persistent offending behaviour throughout. He was sentenced to 6 weeks in jail.
