Singapore records first dengue death in 2014

The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) announced in a joint press statement that a 59-year-old Chinese woman died of dengue on Jan. 8, making it the the city’s first recorded death by the virus this year.

According to the statement, the woman was diagnosed with dengue at the Changi General Hospital (CGH) on Dec. 30 and was subsequently treated at Gleneagles Hospital (GEH), under a collaboration between the two hospitals for the management of dengue patients. However, she passed away on Jan. 8 as a result of her worsened condition.

Both ministries also said that vector control operations are being carried out to search for and destroy any potential mosquito breeding habitats. They also urge all residents to give NEA inspectors their full cooperation during their ground operations, remain vigilant and clear any stagnant water in their houses and around the area.
