57-year-old man drowns after falling into Kallang River

On Saturday afternoon, a 57-year-old man fell into the Kallang River. Suhaimi Abu Bakar was seen by the river at Block 14, Upper Boon Keng Road, around 2.30pm, and an eyewitness told The Straits Times that he retrieved dirty newspapers from a trash can, then allegedly climbed over the railings in an attempt to wash his hands in the muddy water. The witness said he heard a ‘plop’ sound a few minutes later, and when he looked over, the man had vanished.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted around 2.45pm — surface search operations were set in motion and two pairs of divers were deployed. The man’s body was recovered from the river around 4.30pm, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police investigations into the unnatural death are underway.
