It took a couple of days, but the suspect behind the armed robbery at a Western Union branch in Ubi has been arrested, according to the Singapore Police Force.
The 56-year-old Singaporean man was arrested last night at 10:35pm along Pasir Ris Drive 6 after officers established his identity. He will be charged tomorrow for armed robbery, Channel NewsAsia reported.
The man is believed to have entered the branch at Block 301 along Ubi Avenue 1 on Tuesday morning wearing a stormtrooper helmet and a mask, brandishing a knife. Ordering the lone staff member not to shout, he demanded for money and fled on foot with about $4,000 in hand.
While fleeing, he reportedly dropped about $3,000 and fled on a bicycle with $1,071 in a bag. The money he dropped was recovered at the back of the Western Union outlet by staff and members of the public.
By the time he was arrested, the suspect claimed that he had already spent most of the stolen cash. He even used $24 from the loot to buy 4D tickets, which have since been seized as evidence. He also claimed that he threw away the helmet and knife used in the robbery.
Police investigations are still ongoing. Should the man be convicted for armed robbery, he could face up to 10 years in jail, but won’t be caned due to his age.
