A bus driver suffered a fatal accident while driving to a depot early in the morning on Sunday.

The 54-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene in Defu Avenue 1 towards Hougang Avenue 3 by paramedics at around 2:47am. He was driving an empty employees’ bus into the Hougang bus depot but crashed into a tree.

Police have not identified the driver and investigations are ongoing.

“We are deeply saddened by his passing and have extended our heartfelt condolences to his family. We are in close contact with them during this very difficult time and will render all support needed,” a spokesperson from bus operator SBS Transit said.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said they had to extricate the driver, who was trapped in his seat.

A video showed a team of SCDF respondents at the scene with the bus, which was heavily damaged from the crash.

According to the Facebook group Singapore roads accident.com, the man allegedly suffered a sudden heart attack before hitting the tree.
