5 years’ jail for badminton coach who groomed teen student into sexual relationship

The badminton coach who was convicted for having a twisted sexual relationship with his very young teenage student has been sentenced to five years in jail.

The 32-year-old man had first met the boy — then 14 —as a badminton coach in his school back in 2012. Developing a close relationship over the years, the man pressured the vulnerable boy into committing repeated sexual acts under the guise of being a mentor. The coach even brought the boy to a male prostitute at People’s Park Complex, where sexual services where carried out on them both.

They were only caught in October 2014, when patrolling police officers found the two in states of undress in a car parked along Venus Drive.

TODAY reports that the coach had maintained that the boy was a willing party in the relationship, and had also initiated sexual activities. The district judge however stated that he had abused his position of trust as “role model and mentor”, and that the boy’s vulnerability made the offences more egregious.

His sentence will be deferred to Feb 15. He could have been jailed 10 years and fined for sexual assault of a minor and another five years in jail and $10,000 fine for committing an indecent act with a child.
