Five more people were charged today in connection with a brawl that went down outside a Clarke Quay bar.
Among seven fresh arrests, the five men were read charges that included disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly over a Saturday night fight on Eu Tong Sen Street that sent three to the hospital. That makes for 12 arrests since Sunday over the melee which saw two groups of people tackling one another as police officers tried in vain to calm them on a walkway ramp just outside The Tipsy Cow bar.
A 30-year-old man named Sahadev Kumar Thritraj was charged with causing grievous hurt for allegedly stabbing a man with a knife. Four men charged today with unlawful assembly were identified as Victor Alexander Arumugam, 27; Mathan Raj Kunasegaran, 26; Shankar Ganesh Velusamy, 33; and 22-year-old Lashwin Kumar Manimaran.
While the police did not indicate the cause of the fight, it was rumored to have started after tempers flared during a night of heavy drinking before the pandemic-imposed booze curfew at 10:30pm, when consumption of alcohol on the premises is no longer allowed.
Scenes from the aftermath showed paramedics tending to a man lying motionless on the ground while a woman cried near him. Blood could be seen splattered across the walls as bystanders watched from afar.
The police on Sunday said five men 21 to 40 were arrested within 16 hours of the incident. Most of the arrests were helped by surveillance footage. The oldest of those arrested was “found hiding at a dark corner of a back alley” and was also sent to the hospital for his injuries.
Today’s announcement indicated that the seven new arrests included a 22-year-old woman. Just yesterday, four men were charged with rioting armed with a deadly weapon.
Two other men, 26 and 31, will be charged tomorrow with causing grievous hurt by dangerous means and rioting with a deadly weapon, respectively.
Anyone found guilty of unlawful assembly is subject to two years in jail with a fine. Grievous harm is punishable by up to 15 years plus a fine, and rioting with a deadly weapon can result in 10 years behind bars and a caning.
